Birmingham Airport, previously known as Birmingham International Airport, is an international airport located seven nautical miles (13 km; 8.1 mi) east-southeast of Birmingham city center, slightly north of Bickenhill in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, England. Officially launched as Elmdon Airport on 8 July 1939, the airport was taken over by the Air Ministry during World War II and operated by both the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy as RAF Elmdon. It was widely used for flight training and wartime production purposes. The aerodrome was opened for commercial activities on 8 July 1946. Until 4 March 2020, the airport also provided a comprehensive network of domestic routes run by the now extinct FlyBe carrier, which served a large base from the airport to Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
